Satellite Image Technology

A satellite is a human-made object placed in space. Orbiting satellites utilize remote sensors to sample environmental data. These sensors function as sophisticated scanners that filter and observe radiation over hundreds of kilometers. This process is possible because the atmosphere is transparent to certain radiation types via atmospheric windows (also known as channels).

Data Collection and Enhancement

Equipment observes the Earth's surface across 77 spectral bands, ranging from visible to thermal infrared regions. This raw data is transmitted to computers on Earth, where scientists enhance the images to study specific terrain objects or environmental processes.

High-Resolution Image Types

There are 33 primary types of high-resolution satellite imagery:

  • Visible satellite images: Example includes Tropical Storm Alex on June 29th29^{th}, 20102010.
  • Infrared satellite imagery: Example includes global CO2CO_2 levels captured by a Nasa satellite in July 20092009.
  • Water vapor satellite imagery: Example includes Earth imagery from September 14th14^{th}, 20122012.

Applications of Satellite Imagery

Scientists integrate data from visible (referred to as cyber in combined contexts), infrared, and water vapor images to monitor large-scale phenomena.

Environmental and Disaster Monitoring

Satellite data is used for:

  • Weather forecasting and the routing of storms.
  • Observing regional and global impacts of deforestation or pollution.
  • Analyzing damage distributions from volcanoes or earthquakes.
  • Tracking the rehabilitation of areas affected by fires.
  • Studying the impact of ocean surface temperature changes on rainfall patterns.
  • Assessing the effects of droughts on water supplies and flooding on rural and urban areas.
