Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development
Overview
Jean Piaget (1896–1980) was a Swiss psychologist renowned for his systematic study of how children acquire understanding.
He proposed that cognitive development involves changes in cognitive processes and abilities, not just cumulative learning.
Key Concepts: Schema, Assimilation, Accommodation, Equilibration
Schema: Cognitive structure by which individuals intellectually adapt to and organize their environment.
It is both a category of knowledge and the process of acquiring that knowledge.
As experiences happen and new information is presented, new schemas are developed and old schemas are changed or modified.
Assimilation: The process of fitting a new experience into an existing or previously created cognitive structure/schema.
The process is somewhat subjective because we tend to modify experiences slightly to fit in with our pre-existing beliefs.
Accommodation: The process of creating a new schema or modifying existing schemas as a result of new information or experiences.
Equilibration: Achieving a balance between assimilation and accommodation.
When experiences do not match the schemata, cognitive disequilibrium occurs (discrepancy between perception and understanding).

Intelligence is demonstrated through logical and systematic manipulation of symbols related to concrete objects.
Conservation: Understanding that quantity stays the same despite changes in appearance across several domains (7 types listed below).

Operational thinking develops: mental actions are reversible.
Egocentric thought diminishes (less self-centered).
