Functional groups

A specific group of atoms attached to a larger molecule

Used too make predictions about the behavior of the molecule

  • May give reactivity to that molecule

PH is inversely related to the concentration of H+ protons in solution

  • 7-14, low proton concentration

  • 1-7, high proton concentration

  • Acids decrease the pH by DONATING H+ to the solution

Amino functional groups can act as bases at the pH of the cell..

  • whether or not an amino group is charged depends on other parts of the molecule

  • It will always be drawn as charged or not in representation used in this course

  • Bases increase the pH by accepting H+ from the solution

Summary

  • specific group of atoms, usually part of a larger molecule

  • Use properties of functional groups on molecules to make predictions about behavior of the molecule

  • Most functional groups are polar, some are charged besides methyl group
