Functional groups
A specific group of atoms attached to a larger molecule
Used too make predictions about the behavior of the molecule
May give reactivity to that molecule
PH is inversely related to the concentration of H+ protons in solution
7-14, low proton concentration
1-7, high proton concentration
Acids decrease the pH by DONATING H+ to the solution
Amino functional groups can act as bases at the pH of the cell..
whether or not an amino group is charged depends on other parts of the molecule
It will always be drawn as charged or not in representation used in this course
Bases increase the pH by accepting H+ from the solution
Summary
specific group of atoms, usually part of a larger molecule
Use properties of functional groups on molecules to make predictions about behavior of the molecule
Most functional groups are polar, some are charged besides methyl group
