EMT Well Being Study Notes

EMT Well Being

Body Substance Isolation (BSI)

  • Definition: A standard practice in emergency medical services to prevent the transmission of infections or diseases from patient to provider through body substances.
  • Hand Washing: Mandatory procedure after each call to ensure sanitation and prevent infection.
    • Importance of thorough hand washing between contacts with patients.
  • Use of Protective Equipment:
    • Gloves: Essential for any contact with blood or body fluids.
    • Safety Glasses: Protect the eyes from splashes.
    • Gowns: Protect clothing and skin from exposure.
    • Masks: Necessary when there is a risk of airborne transmission or blood splatter.

Cleaning Solutions

  • 10% Bleach Solution:
    • Used for decontaminating surfaces where blood or other body fluids have been present.
    • Efficacy Duration: Effective for approximately 3 weeks post-preparation.
  • Important Note: Dispose of any cleaned surfaces properly after decontamination processes to avoid any post-cleaning contamination.

EMT Immunizations

  • Mandatory Immunizations:
    • MMR Vaccine: Protects against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella.
    • Hepatitis B Vaccine: Crucial for protection against bloodborne pathogens.
  • TB Testing:
    • Mandatory to have a Tuberculosis (TB) test annually.
    • Important for early detection and prevention of TB spread in the EMT community.
  • Note on AIDS Immunization: There is currently no effective immunization available for AIDS.

Proper Lifting Techniques

  • Understanding Physical Limitations:
    • Be conscious of one’s own and partner’s physical abilities to prevent injuries.
  • Carrying Weight:
    • Keep weights close to the body for better balance and control while carrying or lifting.
  • Lifting Technique:
    • Lift using the legs rather than the back, starting from a squat position to minimize strain.
    • Avoid reaching as it can lead to improper lifting techniques that increase the risk of injury.
  • Injury Statistics:
    • The number one cause of EMT injuries is improper lifting techniques, emphasizing the importance of training in proper techniques to prevent injuries.

Hazmat Scene Precautions

  • Key Precautions:
    • Always evaluate the scene for hazardous materials before engaging to protect oneself and others.
    • Use appropriate PPE when dealing with hazardous materials to ensure safety and health.
