Proportional Representation

  • Ontario held a referendum about whether to switch from a first past the post system to a mixed member proportional electoral system

  • In October 2007, Ontario citizens voted down the idea for potentially having proportional representation

  • BC also held a referendum on this topic

  • Mixed Member Proportional Representation is where the people vote both for their political party of choice and an MP to represent their area. In that way, there is a proportionate amount of government officials representing the will of the people

  • It discourages voter apathy

  • Can also mean that the party chooses an MLA instead of the people
