PARAGRAPHS

Beginning

Transition - connects the paragraph to whatever you wrote before

  • However, on the other hand

  • A sentence about how the ideas connect together


Intro

  • Give background about topic

  • Get reader interested by asking a question or telling a story


Topic sentences

  • Not always needed, but can help

  • Tells the reader what the paragraph is about

  • MAIN IDEA


Middle

Details and support

  • longest part of the paragraph

  • has all the information about your topic

Put details in a logical order. Like chronologically or most to least important, or cause and effect


Stay on topic.


Ending

Transition

  • (can go at the beginning or end and joins two ideas)

Conclusion

  • Summary

  • main point you want the reader to understand


All paragraphs need a beginning, middle, and end. Start a paragraph with an introduction and use a transition to connect the ideas, and use a topic sentence if it helps. Use the middle to share details and make sure to stay on topic. Endings can also have a transition and wrap up what you stated in the paragraph and restate the main point



Organizing written works


Beginning (intro)

Main idea or thesis

  • In one sentence

  • Includes topic and your POV

Brainstorm ways to introduce the topic to make the reader interested.

Maybe use a quotation, question, or anecdote

Add background or info as well

Ask yourself to build the intro:

  • Whats my main idea?

  • What will grab the readers attention?

  • What else does the reader need to know?

List ideas you’ll later talk about in the essay


Middle (Body paragraphs)

Each paragraph needs a topic.

Example: Cats v. Dogs

  1. Health benefits of owning a dog vs a cat

  2. The personalities of a cat vs a dog

And you need details

Share at least 2-3 examples


Details should always connect to the main idea and stay on topic


End (Conclusion)

  • Restate the main idea to remind the reader of your main point.

  • Don’t just repeat what you said

  • Sum up the ideas from the body of text

You can state an important new fact but make sure it’s IMPORTANT to the main idea

Ask yourself

  • Whats the takeaway from what I’ve written?

  • What sums it up?

  • How can I apply it to the big picture?

  • What conclusion can I draw?
