• A pedigree is a way of tracing traits though generations
• Half shaded shape is a carrier but not affected by the trait
• Solid is affected by the trait
• Clear is unaffected by the trait
• Square is a male
• Circle is a female
• Generations are noted by roman numerals   * The 1st generation is I, the second II
• Each member has its own number within its generation
• Horizontal lines are marriage lines and vertical lines go to the children and are partly horizontal
• Siblings are placed in birth order from left to right
