Computers in Our Everyday Lives Note

Benefits of Computer Use

  • Efficiency: Saves time, labour, and resources.

  • Accuracy: Precision ensured by quality programs and data, even during mass production or repetitive tasks.

  • Reliability: Consistent performance without fatigue or boredom.

  • Communication: Overcomes time and distance constraints, allowing global information sharing and social interaction.

Criteria for Comparing Computers

  • Power: Defined by CPU speed and the amount of RAM.

  • Purpose: Targeted use cases such as servers or basic office applications.

  • Size and Mobility: Ranges from large mainframe computers to handheld devices.

  • Software: Known as "platforms," such as "Windows machines" or "Linux machines."

Nonportable vs. Portable Systems

  • Nonportable: Typically includes a system unit, monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

    • Desktop computer: Includes entry-level models with lower hardware specifications and "Home editions" of software.

    • Server: Provides services and resources to other computers on a network.

  • Portable: All-in-one design with screen, keyboard, and pointing device integrated for mobility.

    • Types: Laptop / Notebook, Tablet, Hybrid computer, Smartphone, and Phablet.

Categories of Computer Users

  • Personal users: Use technology for limited office tasks, internet banking, social networking, and entertainment.

  • SOHO (Small Office Home Office) users: Perform administrative functions like accounting, billing, and electronic document archiving.

  • Power users: Require top-of-the-range hardware and software; includes Engineers, Architects, Scientists, Video editing professionals, and Hardcore gamers.

  • Mobile users: Need technology (smartphones or tablets) for on-the-go tasks like GPS navigation, quick notes, and internet browsing.

Technological Convergence

  • Definition: The trend of combining separate technologies and functions into a single device.

  • Examples: Smartphones and tablets are primary examples of convergence.
