Balance of power: a condition of roughly equal strength between opposing alliances

Domino theory: if one country falls to communism, every country in that area falls to it too

Democracy: a country in which citizens elect leaders and can run 

Autocracy: a country that is run according to ruler rather than the people

Anocracy: not funny democratic or fully autocratic, but a mix

Theocracy: god is the person in charge, connected to religious leader

Annexation: adding part of state to other state 

Demarcation: drawing the lines on the map 

Treaty: a formal agreement

Colonization: taking control of another country for economics

Centripetal force: things that unify us

Centrifugal force: something that separates us

Neocolonialism: new colonization

Decolonization: giving colonies independence

Devolution: transfer of power back to original country 

Forward capital: capital city relocated to promote economic growth in an area

International organization: multi-state level organization

  • Examples: EU, warsaw pact, UN, NATO

The iron curtain: boundary line, division between communist and democracy in east europe-> berlin wall

Manifest destiny: belief that westward expansion was ok because God told them too

Irredentism: political movement advocating the recovery of lost territories that are seen as culturally or historically related to the nation

Icon: symbol, image, of something the culture finds important

Shatterbelt: a region caught between stronger colliding

  • Example: cyprus, korea, israel

Sovereignty: a state has control to govern themselves

self -determination:  the principle that a group of people, usually sharing a national identity, have the right to choose their own political status and form their own government 

Buffer zone: a geographical area situated between two potentially hostile nations or regions, acting as a neutral space to prevent direct conflict by separating them
