Cubism

An artistic style, which Picasso pioneered, which emphasizes the 2 dimensionality of the canvas by flattening the object being painted. In turn, this style  creates an abstract perspective of the figure, hence creating a shocking reaction.  

Guernica by Picasso -- Often considered to be one of Picasso's greatest works, the artwork is a clear expression of how Picasso felt about the Spanish Civil war. As it uses somber colors to depict the horrors of the Guernica bombing in addition to using cubism in order to heighten the terrors of his complex work.
