• arts and crafts movement took place from 1860s → 1920s england because of the first industrial revolution

• first industrial revolution 1750 → 1850 england

  • people working in factories and mines in harsh conditions (long hours, low wages, no workers rights, unsafe)

  • living conditions were bad (no sanitation, overpopulation, spread of disease, pollution)

• dickensian- term used to describe something that is reminiscent of dickens and his writings about poor social conditions or repulsive characters

• art nouveau- intl style of art, architecture, and applied art (1890, 1910)

• william morris- 19th century artist + poet + architect during industrialization, wanted people to make things for their own satisfaction, he wanted everyone to love their purchases/investments, “you should buy from expensive small businesses instead of cheap chains”

• we differentiate art and craft basically by saying its pleasure/creativity versus work
