What Is a Parenting Style?
A parenting style is a pattern of behaviors and attitudes parents use to raise their children.
Parenting can change as children move through different stages of childhood.
Parents may develop their own parenting style based on different factors and experiences.
4 Parenting Styles
1. Authoritarian Parenting
Parents have many rules and high demands.
Parents expect children to follow directions.
Discipline and punishment may be strict.
There is usually less flexibility.
2. Authoritative Parenting
Parents set clear rules and guidelines.
Parents still allow children to become independent.
Children have opportunities to develop autonomy.
Parents provide guidance while supporting independence.
3. Permissive Parenting
Parents have few rules and expectations.
Children are rarely disciplined.
Parents may have low expectations for maturity and self-control.
Parents are usually warm and responsive but provide fewer limits.
4. Uninvolved Parenting
Parents have few demands and show low responsiveness.
There may be little communication.
Parents may meet basic needs but are generally detached from their children.
