Regeneration and Bone Healing
Callus Formation:
A callus is part of the normal healing process in bone regeneration.
It occurs when a bone is fractured (break is synonymous with fracture).
For instance, if the wrist is fractured, new bone cells start to form, creating a bony callus.
The callus contributes to making the bone thicker.
Cleaning Up Post-Healing:
Once the bone heals, the body will naturally reshape the excess bony tissue, preventing the formation of a prominent bump at the fracture site.
Calluses and Friction
Normal Callus Development:
Callus formation can be a normal process due to friction and pressure from specific activities.
For instance, someone who stands for long hours, such as a waitress, may develop thick calluses, which is considered normal due to their occupation.
Abnormal Callus Development:
If there is thickening without a reasonable explanation (e.g., the person not being on their feet regularly), it may be viewed as abnormal and could require medical attention.
Epidermis and Dermis Layers of Skin
Skin Structure Overview:
The skin consists of two main layers: the epidermis and the dermis.
The epidermis includes five different layers.
Notably, the epidermis does not rest on a basement membrane as typically assumed.
Epidermis Cell Types:
It is important to recognize the four different cell types found in the epidermis.
One fundamental cell type is the keratinocyte, which produces keratin and comprises the upper layers of the epidermis.
Keratinocytes Function:
Keratinocytes are created in the basal layer and migrate upward to the skin's surface, where they eventually become dead cells that flake off.
The keratinocytes in the stratum basale are actively undergoing mitosis, essential for the continuous regeneration of the skin.
Mitosis and Cancer:
While uncontrolled mitosis can lead to cancer, controlled mitotic activity in specific layers (like the stratum basale) is necessary for normal skin renewal.
