Elizabeth was given the title ‘Supreme Governor’ of the Church of England - this title was chosen ==so the Catholics didn’t feel the Pope was being challenged==The Book of Common Prayer had to be used in all churches - clergy who refused to use it would be punished.A set of instructions to enforce the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity, issued by William Cecil.
^^All clergy and royal officials had to swear an oath allegiance to show their acceptance of Elizabeth I’s title^^The wording of the Book of Common Prayer was deliberately vague around communion/transubstantiation to appeal to both religions^^Clergy were instructed to observe and teach the Royal Supremacy and denounce Papal Supremacy^^
A High Commission was established to ensure that the changes implemented at parish level and those whose loyalty was in doubt would be punishedEveryone had to attend church on Sundays & other holy days - recusants (those who refused to attend) had to pay a fine of a shilling for every absence - a shilling was roughly a week’s wages^^Catholic practices such as processions, pilgrimages and ‘miracles’ were banned -^^ ==although images were allowed in churches==
