Overview of Regeneration Ecology
- Regeneration ecology encompasses the phases of a plant's life cycle, including seed dispersal, establishment, growth, and reproduction. Figure 5.1 illustrates this volumetric landscape ecosystem, representing trees as repeating modular units of shoots.
- Phases of Regeneration:
- Phase I: Bank of seeds on and in the forest floor.
- Phase II: Establishment and recruitment of seedlings.
- Phase III: Growth in height, mass, and number of modular units. Vertical bars represent environmental constraints on growth, and the dashed line indicates the influence of the overstory on establishment and recruitment.
