Pre-Trip Inspection – Complete CDL Study Notes

Leaks & Hoses – First Walk-Around

  • Why it matters

    • Any loss of oil, coolant, fuel, or air will quickly escalate to catastrophic engine or brake failure, leaving you stranded or causing a collision.

  • What to do

    • Look under the engine/transmission for fresh puddles or wet spots.

    • Scan the entire underside for slow drips (shiny, dark streaks on metal).

    • Squeeze or flex each visible hose; search for cracks, bubbling, chafing, or soft spots that signal imminent rupture.

  • Key numerical thresholds

    • A single drip every 45 s already violates DOT “no-leak” standards.

Fluids – Levels, Sight Glasses & Dipsticks

  • Engine oil

    • Locate and pull the dipstick with the engine OFF.

    • Acceptable range: anywhere ABOVE the refill/add mark.

    • Running the crankcase below this line can raise operating temp by \approx 20^\circ F and cut engine life in half.

  • Coolant

    • If equipped with a sight glass, fluid must be visible between MIN & MAX.

    • If no sight glass: engine must be COLD; remove radiator cap with gloves and face away, verify coolant touches the filler neck.

  • Power-steering fluid

    • Dipstick or sight glass must show fluid above “ADD.”

    • Low level will cause the steering pump to whine and steering effort to spike.

Engine-Driven Belts

  • Acceptable slack: 1/2 \text{–} 3/4\;\text{inch} in the belt’s center span.

  • Inspect EACH belt (power-steering, water-pump, alternator, air-compressor) for:

    • Cracks, frays, glazing (shiny surface), or missing chunks.

    • A broken strand can wrap around pulleys and shear coolant hoses within minutes.

Hydraulic Brake Master Cylinder

  • Reservoir must be securely mounted, not sweating fluid.

  • Fluid level must fall between “ADD” and “FULL.”

  • A low reading usually indicates worn disc pads or a leak; both warrant immediate service.

Cab Check / Engine Start

  • Safe-start sequence

    1. Gear in NEUTRAL (or PARK on automatics).

    2. Fully depress clutch.

    3. Turn key; keep clutch depressed until idle (≈600–700 rpm), then ease out.

Instrument Sweeps & Gauges
  • Oil-pressure gauge

    • Must climb within 3-5 s of start or warning light extinguishes.

    • Normal range: 40 \text{–} 60\;\text{psi} for most diesels.

  • Temperature gauge

    • Needle begins cold, rises gradually to normal (≈ 180^\circ \text{–} 205^\circ F).

  • Air-pressure gauge

    • Compressor must cut-out at 120 \text{–} 140\;\text{psi}.

  • Ammeter/Voltmeter

    • Charging system must show positive amperage or \ge 13.5\;\text{V}; warning light OFF.

Visibility & Emergency Gear
  • Mirrors – clean, properly aimed from driver’s seat.

  • Windshield – no illegal stickers, cracks, or visual obstructions.

  • Mandatory equipment

    • Spare fuses OR declaration "vehicle is fuse-free & self-resetting."

    • Three red triangles and six fusees OR three liquid-burning flares.

    • Fire extinguisher – fully charged (needle in green) & firmly mounted.

Wipers, Washers & Light Indicators
  • Arms & blades secure, rubber pliable; washers spray evenly.

  • Dash indicators must light when each exterior light is switched on:

    • Left/right turn, four-way flashers, high-beam, ABS.

  • Exterior lamps

    • Verify correct COLORS – red rear clearance, amber elsewhere; all lenses intact.

Horn & HVAC
  • Both air-horn and electric horn must sound.

  • Heater & defroster must force warm air onto glass – critical for winter visibility.

Brake Checks (Inside Cab)
  • Parking brake (air):

    • At governor cut-out, set tractor parking brake, gently tug forward in 1st gear; vehicle must not roll.

    • Combination: repeat with only trailer brake set.

  • Hydraulic system

    1. Pump pedal 3×, hold 5 s – pedal must not sink.

    2. Listen for electric motor of reserve system (key OFF).

    3. Ensure low-pressure buzzer/light is OFF.

  • Air-brake automatic-fail test

    1. At 120\text{–}140\;\text{psi}, engine OFF, wheels chocked, release all brakes. Hold foot brake 1 min.

    • Pressure loss limits: \le 3\;\text{psi} (single) or \le 4\;\text{psi} (combo).

    1. Fan brakes; low-air warning must trigger >55\;\text{psi}.

    2. Continue fanning; at 20\text{–}45\;\text{psi} tractor protection & parking valves must "pop out."

  • Service-brake road test

    • At 5 mph apply service brake; unit must stop straight without pull.

  • Safety belt – anchored, latches cleanly, no frays; failure is an automatic test fail in many states.

Steering System (Exterior)

  • Gear box – bolted tight, no leaks; missing fasteners = OOS (out-of-service).

  • Hoses – no abrasion or fluid seepage.

  • Linkage – pitman arm, drag link, tie-rod ends:

    • No cracks, looseness, missing cotter pins/nuts.

    • Excess play > \tfrac{1}{8}\;\text{turn} in a 20-inch wheel disqualifies vehicle.

Suspension

  • Springs

    • Leaf: none missing, shifted, cracked, or broken.

    • Coil: no fractures or distortion.

  • Torsion/torque arms – straight, bushings present.

  • Air-bags – fully inflated, no audible leaks or rubbed spots.

  • Mounts – spring hangers, u-bolts tight; worn bushings cause axle mis-alignment.

  • Shock absorbers – securely bolted top & bottom; no oil streaks.

Brake Components (All Axles)

  • Slack adjusters & pushrods

    • With brakes released, manual slack adjuster travel \le 1\;\text{inch} by hand.

  • Chambers – round, not dented; clamps tight, no hissing.

  • Hoses/lines – no bubbles, chafing, or wetness.

  • Drums/rotors – no cracks > \tfrac{1}{2} bolt-hole width; free of grease.

  • Linings – visible thickness > 1/4\;\text{inch}; even wear.

Wheels & Tires

  • Rims – no dents or weld repairs; rust streaks at bolt holes hint at looseness.

  • Tires

    • Tread depth: \ge 4/32\;\text{inch} steer, \ge 2/32\;\text{inch} others.

    • Even wear; sidewalls free of cuts, bubbles, exposed ply.

    • Inflation verified by gauge (never by kick); PSI per manufacturer (often 95–110 psi).

  • Lug nuts – all present, no cracks, rust trails, or shiny threads.

  • Hub/axle seals – sight glass shows oil, no streaks on wheel.

  • Dual spacing – even gap, no debris lodged; spacers centered.

Side of Vehicle

  • Doors – open/close smoothly; seals intact to prevent CO infiltration.

  • Mirrors – brackets tight for vibration-free view.

  • Fuel tanks – straps secure, caps tight, no diesel sheen.

  • Drive shaft – straight; universal joints greased & bolt caps intact.

  • Exhaust – no holes; soot indicates leak that could poison cab.

  • DEF system (newer diesels)

    • >1/8 tank; dash lamp confirms.

  • Frame – no cracks, missing cross-members, or excessive rust.

Rear & Underride Area

  • Splash guards – mounted, proper height from ground.

  • Doors/ties/lifts – hardware sound; all cargo restraints available.

  • Tandem slide – release arm locked; pins fully through rail holes.

Remainder of Trailer (Every Axle)

  • Wheels, brakes, suspension, splash guards – repeat same checks as tractor.

Ethical, Safety & Regulatory Implications

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) mandate a full pre-trip; failure can result in \$4{,}000+ fines and out-of-service orders.

  • Ethically, a thorough inspection protects the motoring public from runaway trucks, wheel-offs, and hazardous-material spills.

  • Logically, catching a $5 belt or $3 fuse during pre-trip avoids $10 000 roadside repairs and lost loads.

Study & Exam Tips

  • Use a consistent clockwise or front-to-rear routine so nothing is skipped.

  • Speak every item aloud during the CDL test; silence counts as “not inspected.”

  • When quoting pressures or distances, use the exact numbers above; examiners grade on specificity.
