Hypothesis Testing and Descriptive Research Methods

- Descriptive Methods: A category of research designs focused on systematically observing, measuring, and describing behavior without direct manipulation of the environment or variables.
Case Studies
- Definition: A descriptive research method in which one individual or one specific group is studied in a great deal of detail.
- Advantages:
- Yields a vast amount of comprehensive, detailed information.
- Provides valuable information and insights that may be extremely difficult or impossible to obtain through other research methods.
- Disadvantages:
- Findings may not generalize to larger populations due to the unique or specific nature of the single subject or group.
- It is hard or impossible to tease out causal relationships between variables.
Naturalistic Observation
- Definition: A descriptive method in which observation and description of behavior are conducted directly in the organism's natural environment.
- Advantages:
- Reduces reactivity, which is defined as an individual changing their behavior simply because they know they are being studied or observed.
- Disadvantages:
- The researcher has no control over the situation, setting, or external variables.
Laboratory Observation
- Definition: A descriptive method in which observation and description are conducted in a controlled, artificial laboratory setting.
- Advantages:
- Offers significantly more control over the environment than naturalistic observation.
- Can take into account and control for some confounding variables.
- Can reduce reactivity to some degree through standardized laboratory protocols.
- Disadvantages:
- There will still be some reactivity, as subjects remain aware that they are in an artificial setting.
- The researcher is still just observing behavior without directly manipulating the situation.
Survey Methods
- Definition: A descriptive method in which self-reported attitudes, opinions, or behaviors are collected from participants.
- Advantages:
- A vast array of topics can be studied using this method.
- Highly adaptable; researchers can create a survey asking about virtually anything.
- Disadvantages:
- Vulnerable to response bias, where respondents do not answer questions accurately or honestly.
- Susceptible to social desirability effects, where participants report answers that make them look favorable rather than their true attitudes or actions.
Correlational Research Methods
Fundamentals of Correlation
- Correlation Method: A research approach that involves seeing how two variables are related to each other.
- Definition of Variable: A variable is defined as anything that can take on different values and is not always constant.
- Direction of Correlation:
- Positive Correlation: Indicates that both variables are moving in the same direction (e.g., as one variable increases, the other increases, or as one decreases, the other decreases).
- Negative Correlation: Indicates that the variables move in opposite directions (e.g., as one variable increases, the other decreases).
Evaluation of the Correlational Method
- Advantages of the Correlational Method:
- Describe: Allows researchers to describe the patterns and strength of relationships between variables.
- Predict: Enables researchers to predict the outcome of one variable based on knowledge of another.
- Generate New Hypotheses: Helps identify potential patterns and relationships that lead to the creation of new theoretical hypotheses.
- Disadvantages of the Correlational Method:
- Inability to Determine Causality: Cannot determine cause and effect between variables, as underlying unmeasured variables or directionality issues cannot be ruled out.
