El imperfecto (The Imperfect Tense)

We use the imperfect tense to talk about:

• Habitual actions in the past.
• Ongoing actions in the past.
• Repeated actions in the past.

In English, the imperfect tense often corresponds to phrases like:

• "used to"
• "would"
• "was/were -ing"

Expressions indicating frequency often used with the imperfect tense:

• siempre (always)
• muchas veces (many times)
• a menudo (often)
• generalmente (generally)

Irregular Verbs

• Ser (to be):

  • yo: era
  • tú: eras
  • usted, él, ella: era
  • nosotros, nosotras: éramos
  • vosotros, vosotras: erais
  • ustedes, ellos, ellas: eran

• Ir (to go):

  • yo: iba
  • tú: ibas
  • usted, él, ella: iba
