Hepatitis Overview:
Definition: Inflammation of the liver (Hepat = liver / itis = inflammation).
Causes: Viral infection, chemicals, drugs, or drinking alcohol.
Types: Five distinct types exist: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.
Primary health care concerns: Hepatitis B (Hep B) and Hepatitis C (Hep C).
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV):
Transmission routes: Transmitted via blood/blood products, unprotected sex, and across the placenta from mother to baby.
Risk factors for health care workers: Needlestick injuries, cuts from contaminated objects, and exposure of broken skin or mucous membranes to contaminated blood or other body fluids.
Prevention: Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended by OSHA.
Hepatitis C Virus (HCV):

Mode of transmission: Classified as a bloodborne pathogen.
Pathological outcome: Directly leads to liver failure.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS:

Effect: Causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which attacks and impairs the immune system.
Prognosis & Mortality: People with AIDS typically die from infections and malignancies because their immune system is severely compromised.
Medical status: There is no cure or vaccine for AIDS/HIV.
Standard Precautions in Health Care
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:
Gloves: Must be worn if touching blood or body fluids, including touching contaminated surfaces or objects.
Waterproof Gown: Must be worn if clothing could become soiled with blood or body fluids.
Facial Protection: Mask, face shield, and eye goggles must be worn when blood or body fluids could splash or spray.
General Rule: PPE must be worn whenever exposure is anticipated.
Safe Work Practices & Waste Disposal:
Sharps Disposal: Needles, razors, and other sharp items must be disposed of properly in OSHA-approved containers.
