Scientific Attitude & Critical Thinking

The three key attitudes of science: Curiosity, Skepticism, and Humility

  • Psychology as a Science: Uses the scientific method (hypothesize, observe, test, collect data, analyze results, draw conclusions) to examine empirical questions; non-testable subjects (e.g., ghosts, God, the afterlife) cannot be studied.
  • Three Basic Scientific Attitudes:
    • Curiosity: Asking "Does it work?" and verifying predictions through empirical testing.
    • Skepticism: Asking "What do you mean? How do you know?" to sift reality from fantasy without being cynical or gullible.
    • Humility: Expressing "That was unexpected! Let's explore further" and accepting when data contradicts predictions ("The rat is always right").
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluating claims without automatically accepting conclusions.
    • Key steps: Examine the source, detect hidden bias, evaluate evidence, and assess conclusions.
  • Cognitive Biases & Limitations of Common Sense:
    • Hindsight Bias ("I-knew-it-all-along phenomenon"): The tendency to believe, after an outcome has occurred, that one would have foreseen it.
    • Overconfidence: The tendency to overestimate the accuracy of one's knowledge; gathered evidence often produces higher accuracy than quick decisions.
    • Perceiving Order in Random Events: Overinterpreting random sequences as pattern-based (e.g., seeing 5 D's in a row on a scantron).

Scientific Method, Theories, & Replication

  • Theory: An organized framework of observations that explains behaviors or events and predicts future outcomes (e.g., how sleep affects memory).
  • Hypothesis: A testable prediction produced by a theory that directs empirical research.
  • Falsifiability: The requirement that a scientific theory must be capable of being proven false.
  • Operational Definitions: Precise, carefully worded statements defining the exact procedures and measurements used for variables (e.g., making concepts measurable by amount or time spent).
  • Replication: Repeating the essence of a research study with different participants or situations to confirm initial findings.

Non-Experimental Research Methods & Sampling

  • Case Study: An in-depth investigation of an individual or small group to discover universal principles (e.g., The Galvin Family study on schizophrenia).
    • Strengths: Useful for rare conditions or unethically manipulable scenarios (e.g., brain damage, infant drug exposure).
    • Limitations: Weakest form of evidence; cannot establish cause-and-effect or generalize to broad populations.
  • Naturalistic Observation: Recording subjects' behaviors in natural, unmanipulated environments (e.g., lunchroom seating patterns by race; Jane Goodall observing chimpanzees).
    • Limitations: Describes behavior but cannot explain underlying causes.
  • Surveys: Tools used to collect self-reported attitudes or behaviors from large numbers of people.
    • Wording Effects: Minor changes in question phrasing or order altering respondent answers.
    • Social Desirability Bias: Tendency to answer in ways that conform to social expectations or researcher desires.
    • Self-Report Bias: Inaccurate reporting of one's own behaviors or characteristics.
  • Sampling Principles:
    • Population: The complete group being studied from which samples are drawn.
    • Sampling Bias: A flawed process generating an unrepresentative sample.
    • Convenience Sample: Selecting readily available participants.
    • Random Sample: A sample in which every population member has an equal chance of selection.
    • Generalizability: Small representative samples are preferable to large unrepresentative samples.
  • Meta-Analysis: A statistical procedure combining results from multiple independent studies to determine an overall conclusion (e.g., evaluating sunscreen efficacy across many trials).

Correlational Research & Data Interpretation

  • Correlation: A statistical measure of the strength and direction of the relationship between two co-varying variables.
  • Correlation Coefficient (rr): A numerical index ranging from 1.0-1.0 to +1.0+1.0.
    • Values closer to 1.0-1.0 or +1.0+1.0 indicate stronger relationships (±0.6\ge \pm 0.6 is considered strong).
  • Directions of Correlation:
    • Positive Correlation: Variables move in the same direction together (e.g., height and weight; sleep duration and academic performance; breastfeeding duration and academic achievement).
    • Negative Correlation: Variables move in opposite directions (e.g., school absences and GPA; exercise frequency and depression levels; leafy vegetable intake and mental decline rate).
  • Limitations of Correlational Data:
    • Correlation does NOT prove Causation.
    • Directionality Problem: Inability to determine which variable causes changes in the other.
    • Third Variable Problem: Unmeasured extraneous factors causing changes in both studied variables.
  • Illusory Correlation: Perceiving a relationship between variables when none exists (e.g., wearing a Packers jersey to influence a game outcome).
  • Regression Toward the Mean: The tendency for extreme or unusual scores/events to return toward their average on subsequent measurements.

Experimental Method & Control Procedures

  • Experiment: A research design where an investigator manipulates one or more factors to directly observe effects on behavior or mental processes; the only method capable of establishing cause and effect.
  • Experimental Variables:
    • Independent Variable (IV): The factor manipulated or changed by the experimenter (the cause, e.g., limiting screen time to 30 minutes/day; schizophrenia drug dosage).
    • Dependent Variable (DV): The outcome variable measured to assess the effect of the IV (the effect, e.g., depression rates; frequency of psychotic episodes).
    • Confounding Variables: Uncontrolled external factors other than the IV that could influence the DV.
  • Experimental Conditions:
    • Experimental Group: Participants exposed to the treatment or manipulated IV.
    • Control Group: Participants not exposed to the treatment, serving as a baseline for comparison.
  • Control Techniques:
    • Random Assignment: Randomly assigning participants to experimental or control groups to equalize preexisting individual differences.
    • Single-Blind Procedure: Participants are unaware of whether they are receiving the actual treatment or a placebo.
    • Double-Blind Procedure: Neither the participants nor the research staff know who receives the treatment versus the placebo.
    • Placebo Effect: Experimental results caused by participant expectations alone through administration of an inert substance.
    • Experimenter Bias: Unintentional influence by researchers that aligns results with their hypotheses.

Review Questions & Practice Assessment

  • Purpose of Random Assignment: Minimizes potential confounding variables by reducing baseline differences between experimental and control groups.
  • Double-Blind Study Scenario: A drug study where neither participants nor pill distributors know who receives the drug versus placebo.
  • Purpose of a Control Group: Allows researchers to establish a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the independent and dependent variables.
  • Identifying Negative Correlation: An increase in time spent exercising associated with a decrease in depression levels.
  • Interpreting r=0.87r = -0.87: A strong negative correlation indicating that as one variable increases, the other variable consistently decreases.
  • Sampling Identification: Contacting every 100th person on a voter registration list is an application of systematic random sampling.
