GLOSSARY
RIB AND PANEL VAULTING Roof structural system where stone masonry ribs support the curved stone vaults
AMBULATORY Curving corridor behind the apse of a church
CHEVET Apse, ambulatory and radiating chapels of a church
CRUCIFORM PLAN Cross-shaped plan of a church; as opposed to the basilican, or rectangular, plan
TRANSEPTS Side “wings” or transverse portions of the church crossing the nave at right angles forming the cruciform plan
PARTS OF A MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE:
MOTTE Elevated ground on which a lord’s manor house was built
KEEP or DONJON Main structure of a lord’s manor
BAILEY Open service courtyard of the castle
PALISADE High wall around the manor; usually surrounded by an outer ditch
PARTS OF A CASTLE:
RAMPART Walkway on top of the walls
MACHICOLATIONS Overhangs above ramparts with floor-holes to drop missiles, boiling oil, and other weapons
DRAWBRIDGE The bridge-gate of the main castle entryway
PORTCULLIS Iron grid gate behind the drawbridge
