Intellectual Disability

  • Intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits in conceptual, social, and practical domains

  • Must meet the following 3 criteria

    • Deficits in intellectual functions confirmed by clinical assessment and standardized intelligence test

    • Deficits in adaptive functioning leading to failure to meet developmental standards for independence and social responsibility

    • onset during the developmental period

  • For preschool children, there may be no obvious conceptual differences

  • For school-age children and adults, there are difficulties in learning academic skills and support is needed in one or more areas to meet age-related expectations.

  • In adults, abstract thinking, executive function, as well as functional use of academic skills are impaired.

  • the individual is immature in social interactions

  • there may be difficulties regulating emotion and behavior in age-appropriate fashion
