Spinal Cord Anatomy
Describe anatomy and protection of the spinal cord.

• The spinal cord extends from the brainstem through the vertebral canal

• Contains gray matter in the center and white matter on the outside

Protection of the Spinal Cord

• Vertebrae protect the cord

• Meninges surround the cord

• Cerebrospinal fluid cushions and protects it

Spinal Nerves
Describe structure, coverings, and distribution.

• Spinal nerves are mixed nerves containing sensory and motor fibers

• Formed from dorsal and ventral roots

• Covered by connective tissue layers

• Distribute signals to muscles, skin, and organs throughout the body

Define "plexus."

• A plexus is a network of intersecting spinal nerves
