Dark Web (Donker Web) Study Notes

REBOOT: BACKGROUND AND THE ORIGIN OF DARKNESS

  • The Yellow Envelope and the 9mm Pistol: At age eleven, Xander (later revealed as Xander Gericke) enters his father's (Judge Gericke) study to find him crying over a yellow envelope and a 9mm pistol. His father makes him promise to keep it a secret from his mother.
  • The Abduction of Judge Gericke: Six months later, two men in black T-shirts and jeans arrive. They mention a name: Dok (Doctor). Judge Gericke realizes the danger and tells Xander to hide and not come out until called. A woman screams in the house. Xander watches from the shadows as his father is punched and collapses. Fear is described physically: fire through the body, adrenaline in high gear, and the loud thumping of one's own heart.
  • Terminology - Reboot: To disconnect all device drivers, close all programs, and restart a computer's operating system to solve a problem or for normal use.

SKREE (SCREAM): THE AFTERMATH OF LAWSON COLLEGE

  • The Death Rumor: News reports (Turret Media) claim Greg Owen is dead, his body pulled from the Canale Grande in Venice. Greg clarifies that while someone died in Venice, it wasn't him.
  • The Ruined Home: The Owen family home in Sandhurst has become a silent, heavy place. Business partners have vanished, fearing the "stain" of Chris Owen's crimes. Only Thomas Lawson (TJ's grandfather) offered help.
  • The Weight of Betrayal: Greg struggles with the fact that he was the one who exposed his father's complicity in Project Nursery Rhyme (a scandal involving virally manipulated flu vaccines).
  • The Memory of John: Greg visits his late brother John's room, which his mother keeps exactly as it was. John lived for adrenaline (bungee jumping, rafting) and famously said he did it "for the fall, for the fear." John died by suicide (a pill bottle).
  • Maternal Grief: Greg's mother describes losing a child as drowning in the depths of the sea. She confesses that when she was alone in the house, she would close all doors and windows and just scream.

TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY LIFE

  • Departure for Stellenbosch: Greg leaves for Stellenbosch University ("Maties") to study Sport Science. He buys a BMW 118i with trust fund money. His mother warns: "The things you pack are the things you must carry with you."
  • Xander/Eckardt’s Motivation: Greg reflects on Eckardt Wilken (actually Xander Gericke), the clever hacker who befriended Greg in matric to launch a social engineering attack on the Owens to avenge his father (the Judge).
  • Lawson College Motto: Lux hominum vita (Light is the life of man).
  • Social Isolation: In Stellenbosch, Greg remains an outsider. He is recognized as "the guy who put his father in jail" and the son of the "Candlestick-maker." Even the father of a potential love interest (Lisa) warns him to stay away because of his family's reputation.

THE SEARCH FOR THE BAKER

  • Project Nursery Rhyme Trio:
    • The Butcher: Dr. Alec Pienaar (Principal of Lawson College).
    • The Candlestick-maker: Chris Owen (Media mogul).
    • The Baker: The unidentified third member who created the lethal virus. He remains at large.
  • The Decision: Greg decides to find the Baker as a form of atonement and to ensure the real culprit doesn't get away while his father sits in prison.
  • Digital Forensics: Greg uses the Wayback Machine to find old PlusUltraMed (Project Nursery Rhyme’s front company) web pages. He finds an organogram featuring Doctor Rian Trollip.
  • Dr. Rian Trollip: Historical records show Trollip was arrested for child pornography and allegedly died by suicide (hanging) in his cell during Greg's matric year. Greg suspects the Baker might be a dead man or that Trollip was framed.

RECONNECTING WITH THE HACKER

  • The Blooded Message: Someone breaks into Greg's apartment and leaves a message in blood on the balcony door: "You and your hacker buddy must leave me alone."
  • Re-entering the Underworld: Greg accesses Xander's old blog (Ekk-0’s Underworld). Xander responds with a Greek palindrome: ΝΙΨΟΝ ΑΝΟΜΗΜΑΤΑ ΜΗ ΜΟΝΑΝ ΟΨΙΝ ("Wash your sins, not just your face").
  • The Death of Tom: Tom (the former Lawson groundskeeper) meets Greg in a church but refuses to help. Shortly after, Tom's body is found in the Eersterivier with his tongue cut out—a warning to stop talking.
  • The Video of Judge Gericke: Xander sends Greg a video found on a server. It depicts the brutal execution of Xander's father by Dok Pienaar and his men, who suffocate him with a rubber inner tube (tubing) while the Baker (as cameraman) films and mocks him.

BIOHACKING AND ISTANBUL

  • The Transponder: Xander sends Greg a "Dangerous Things" kit containing an xNT NFC Tag (an RFID chip the size of a rice grain). He demands Greg plant it in his hand as a test of loyalty.
  • The Ruse: Greg’s neighbor, Chloe (an art student), helps him Photoshop a fake wound to fool Xander. However, Greg's friend Plank actually implants the chip in his own hand while high/curious. This makes Plank the "key" to the laptop Xander provided.
  • Flight to Turkey: The group (Greg, Plank, and later Xander and his girlfriend Ayla) meets in Istanbul. Xander explains the Technium—a technological super-organism that slowly removes human autonomy.
  • Tracking the Baker: Using a Trojan hidden in a video CODEC on the dark web, they trace the Baker’s IP address to Florence, Italy.

THE CLIMAX IN VENICE

  • The Revelation of the Baker: The Baker is revealed to be Dr. Sebastian Stadler, a man Greg met at a party organized by Thomas Lawson. Stadler was involved in Project Coast (South Africa's apartheid-era chemical and biological warfare program) and was researching CRISPR gene-editing for remote brain control.
  • The Confrontation in Giardini Reali: In Venice, the group is cornered by Stadler and his wife/associate Valkyrie. Stadler reveals he poisoned Greg with Paraoxon (an organophosphate) via a hat he was given.
  • The Execution: Xander, overcome by the trauma of his father’s death and Stadler’s cruelty, shoots Stadler three times (one in the head, two in the heart).
  • The Boat Chase: As the group escapes by boat, Valkyrie’s men attack. A speedboat rams them and gunmen fire into the water. Greg attempts to save oom Dirk (Lisa's father), but Plank is killed in the crossfire.

RESOLUTION AND BITTER ENDINGS

  • The Death Report: The media mistakenly reports Greg’s death because the transponder in the body pulled from the water (Plank’s) was linked to Greg’s ID.
  • The Final Meeting: Greg visits his father, who is recovering from an assassination attempt in prison. Chris Owen finally shows remorse: "I was not a good father to you."
  • Xander’s Departure: Xander and Ayla vanish after the Venice incident. Xander's final realization on the boat before throwing his gun into the water: "A man who seeks revenge must dig two graves. I am just like them now."
  • Final Outlook: Greg finds comfort in Lisa and his mother, realizing that to survive, one must be more than bulletproof—one must be "bombproof."
