Comprehensive Irish Driving Test Guide and CAO Academic Documentation

Rules of the Road & Driving Regulations

  • Traffic Light Sequences & Light Indications:

    • Standard Sequence: Amber, Red, Green (or Green, Amber, Red depending on the phase of transition).
    • Amber Light: Stop unless it is unsafe to do so before reaching the stop line.
    • Green Light: Go provided it is safe to do so.
    • Flashing Amber Light: Proceed if the crossing is clear, but pedestrians have priority.
    • Flashing Red Light: Stop immediately; indicates a train is approaching at a railway level crossing.
    • Filter Light: A green or amber arrow indicating permission to proceed in the direction of the arrow if it is safe to do so.
    • Lights Out of Order: Treat the junction as if it has a red light; stop and proceed with caution when safe.
  • Legal Driving Limits & Vehicle Maintenance Requirements:

    • Legal Drink-Drive Limit: For a learner driver, novice driver, or professional driver, the limit is strictly 20 milligrams20\text{ milligrams} per 100 millilitres100\text{ millilitres} of blood.
    • Minimum Tyre Tread Depth: Must be a minimum of 1.6 mm1.6\text{ mm} across the main treads of the tyre.
    • Tyre Inspection Protocol: Check the sidewall for visible damage, ensure all wheel nuts are present and tight, verify correct tyre inflation, and verify markings (e.g., example specification 5/45R15, MADE KOREA).
    • Under-Bonnet Engine Checks: Routinely inspect the brake fluid level, battery condition, coolant level, engine oil dipstick, and windscreen wash reservoir.
  • Speed Limits by Road Classification:

    • Motorways (Blue signs with M designation): Maximum speed limit is 120 km/h120\text{ km/h}.
    • National Roads — Primary and Secondary (Green signs with N designation): Maximum speed limit is 100 km/h100\text{ km/h}.
    • Non-National Regional and Local Roads (White signs with R or L designation): Maximum speed limit is 80 km/h80\text{ km/h}.
    • Built-up Areas (Cities, towns, and boroughs): Standard speed limit is 50 km/h50\text{ km/h}.
    • Special Speed Limit Zones (Densely populated areas / Crios Mall / SLOW ZONE): Designated speed limits are set to 30 km/h30\text{ km/h} or 60 km/h60\text{ km/h}.
  • Safe Distance Rules & Driving Concepts:

    • The 2-Second Rule: Used as a measurement of safe following distance under dry road conditions. Double this distance to 4 seconds in wet conditions, and extend it further in icy conditions.
    • Stopping Distance at 50 km/h50\text{ km/h}: On a dry road, the total stopping distance is approximately 25 metres25\text{ metres}.
    • Coasting: Occurs when the vehicle is not being driven by the engine, either by holding the clutch pedal down completely or placing the gear lever in neutral. Coasting is dangerous because it severely reduces the driver's control over the vehicle.
    • Tailgating: The unsafe practice of driving too close to the vehicle ahead without maintaining a safe stopping distance.
    • Seat Belt Responsibility: The driver is legally responsible for ensuring passengers under 17 years17\text{ years} of age wear seat belts. Passengers aged 17 years17\text{ years} and over are individually responsible for wearing their own seat belts.

Junctions, Priority & Road Markings

  • Right of Way & Junction Rules:

    • Junctions of Equal Importance: Yield to traffic approaching from the right and traffic already established inside the junction. At a T-junction of equal importance, yield to traffic from both sides.
    • Unmarked Crossroads of Equal Importance: Give priority to traffic already on the junction and traffic approaching from your right.
    • Crossroads/Junctions with Major Roads: Traffic on minor roads must give way/yield to traffic on major roads or dual carriageways.
    • Roundabout Priority: Give right of way to traffic already established on the roundabout, and yield to cyclists.
    • Yield Sign Protocol: Near junctions or roundabouts, yield to major road traffic or existing roundabout traffic; do not proceed until safe.
    • Stop Sign Protocol without Stop Line: Complete a full stop level with the stop sign itself.
  • Yellow Box Junction Rules:

    • Definition: Marked by a grid pattern of criss-cross yellow lines designed to maintain smooth traffic flow.
    • General Rule: Do not enter a yellow box junction unless you can clear it completely without stopping.
    • Exception: You may enter when intending to turn right, while waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic, provided doing so does not block other traffic that has right of way.
    • Level Crossings: Never enter yellow box junctions located at railway level crossings or tramway crossings unless you can leave them without stopping.
  • Center Lines & Road Markings:

    • Solid White Line (Center): Stay to the left. Do not cross except for emergency access or entering premises.
    • Single Broken White Line: You may cross or overtake if safe and legal.
    • Double Broken White Lines: Alert drivers that continuous white lines lie a short distance ahead. Do not cross unless safe.
    • Continuous and Broken White Line Combined: Obey the line nearest to your vehicle. If the continuous line is on your side, you must remain to the left of it.
    • Hatched Markings: Diagonal or chevron road markings used for merging, diverging, or central median islands. Drivers must not enter areas covered by hatched markings.
    • White Diamond Marking: Denotes a designated tram or bus lane.

    • Continuous Yellow Line (Road Edge): Indicates no parking during specific hours.
    • Broken Yellow Line: Denotes the hard shoulder or edge of the carriageway.
  • Hard Shoulder Rules:

    • Standard Usage: Reserved primarily for pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers may pull in briefly to allow faster traffic to overtake only if no pedestrians or cyclists are present, and no junctions or entrances are nearby. Driving continuously in the hard shoulder is forbidden.
    • Motorway Hard Shoulder: Restricted strictly to emergency use, vehicle breakdowns, or under direct instruction from Gardaí or official road signs.
  • Bus Lanes & Tram Lanes:

    • With-Flow Bus Lane: Operates in the same direction as adjacent traffic. Restricted to buses, taxis, and bicycles during operational hours shown on information plates.
    • Contra-Flow Bus Lane: Operates in the opposite direction of traffic flow. Reserved exclusively for buses 24 hours24\text{ hours} a day, 7 days a week; no other traffic may enter at any time.

Pedestrian Crossings & Parking Restrictions

  • Zebra Crossings vs. Pelican Crossings:

    • Zebra Crossing: Denoted by black and white stripes on the road and yellow flashing beacons. Controlled directly by the presence of pedestrians waiting or crossing.
    • Pelican Crossing: Controlled by pedestrian lights. Uses a light sequence including a flashing amber phase where pedestrians have absolute priority.
    • White Zig-Zag Lines: Marked at the approaches to pedestrian crossings; strict prohibition against parking or overtaking within this area.
  • Central Islands at Crossings:

    • Zebra Crossing with Central Island: Treat as two completely separate crossings.
    • Pelican Crossing (Straight Across): Counts as a single crossing even if a central island is present.
    • Pelican Crossing (Staggered): If the light phases/crossings on either side of the central island are not in a straight line, treat them as two separate crossings.
  • Specific Parking Prohibitions & Clearance Distances:

    • Maximum Kerb Distance: Park within 45 cm45\text{ cm} of the kerb.
    • Junction Clearance: Do not park within 5 metres5\text{ metres} of a junction (must park over 5 metres5\text{ metres} away).
    • Pedestrian Crossing Clearance: Do not park within 15 metres15\text{ metres} before a pedestrian crossing or within 5 metres5\text{ metres} after it.
    • Clearway: Absolute prohibition on stopping or parking during specified times, unless queued in traffic.
    • Prohibited Parking Scenarios: Do not park opposite a continuous white line, at a pelican or zebra crossing, on a clearway, near a bend or junction, at a taxi rank, or where it obstructs road signs.

Overtaking, Lane Usage & Motorway Rules

  • Overtaking Rules & Protocols:

    • Pre-Overtaking Checks: Ensure the road ahead is completely clear, check center and side mirrors, check blind spots, and signal intent.
    • When Overtaken: Never increase your speed.
    • Permitted Overtaking on Left:
      1. When the driver ahead has signaled and positioned their vehicle to turn right, and you are proceeding straight ahead.
      2. On a one-way street where traffic in the right-hand lane is moving slower than traffic in the left-hand lane.
      3. When traffic in all lanes is moving slowly and the left-hand lane is moving faster than the right-hand lane.
      4. When you have signaled your intention to turn left.
  • Prohibited Overtaking Locations:

    • Across a continuous white line.
    • Approaching or on a bend or dangerous corner.

    • Where your vehicle would obstruct a road sign.
    • For three-axle vehicles/goods vehicles in designated tunnel lanes.
  • Motorway & Multi-Lane Driving:

    • Standard Lane Positioning: On a multi-lane dual carriageway or motorway, always cruise in Lane 1 (the left-hand driving lane) unless overtaking or following specific road signs.
    • Red X Overhead Signal: Indicates the lane is closed; you must not drive in this lane.
    • Green Arrow Overhead Signal: Indicates the lane is open for use.
    • Motorway vs. Dual Carriageway Differences: Motorways feature exits exclusively on the left, contain no traffic lights, no level junctions, no roundabouts, and have a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h120\text{ km/h}.
    • Motorway Breakdown Procedure: Move immediately to the hard shoulder, activate hazard warning lights, place a red warning triangle at a safe distance behind the vehicle, and call for emergency assistance.

Lighting, Hazard Management & Emergency Actions

  • Headlights & Dipped Lights:

    • Use of Dipped Headlights: Required when meeting oncoming traffic, following closely behind another vehicle, driving in built-up lit areas or continuously lit roads, in poor weather conditions (snow, heavy rain, fog), and during dusk or dawn.
    • Fog Lights: Use only in dense fog or severely reduced visibility conditions.
    • Hazard Warning Lights: Activate when stationary and causing an obstruction, or during emergency stopping scenarios.
  • Handling Headlight Dazzle:

    • Oncoming Vehicle Dazzle: Slow down, look toward the left verge/kerb away from the lights, watch for pedestrians or cyclists, and bring the vehicle to a complete stop if necessary.
