Football Plays and Assignments

Fast Play

  • Objective: Quick play execution.

  • Playside Assignment:

    • Position:

      • Flash run fake.

      • One-step vertical, get shoulders back to the quarterback.

    • Backs (F/H): Block MDM (most dangerous man) for left or right.

      • Strong outside hand technique.

    • Outside Receivers (O/S, L/R): Block MDM for left or right.

      • If a run is tagged, execute the called run play.

    • Slots (Z/H): Block MDM for left or right.

      • Can execute a cross block if there are three wide receivers.

  • Quarterback (QB):

    • Put the ball on the upfield shoulder of the receiver.

    • Read the numbers and space available.

Bubble Play

  • Objective: Quick screen pass to the outside.

  • Playside Assignment:

    • Position:

      • Flash run fake.

    • Backs (F/H): Block MDM for H/Z.

      • Strong outside hand.

    • Outside Receivers (O/S, L/R): Replace the left or right receiver.

      • Press the outside hip of the block.

    • Slots (Z/H): Block MDM for H/Z.

  • Backside Assignment:

    • H: Run an arrow route out of the backfield.

    • If a run is tagged, execute the called run play.

  • Quarterback (QB):

    • Put the ball on the upfield shoulder.

    • Read the numbers and space.

  • Play Variations: Fast, Bubble, Chains, Slants, Stick.

Chains Play

  • Objective: Short, quick passes, often used on 3rd or 4th down to gain the necessary yardage for a first down.

  • Playside Assignment:

    • Position:

      • Hitch rules apply.

        • In the core, execute a run block or pass protection.

    • Backs (F/H): Run a 5-yard chain route.

      • On 3rd or 4th down, run to the sticks (first down marker).

    • Outside Receivers (O/S, L/R): Run a 5-yard chain route.

      • On 3rd or 4th down, run to the sticks.

    • Slots (Z/H): Run a 5-yard chain route.

  • Backside Assignment:

    • Hitch rules apply.

      • If split out, mirror the pass concept.

      • Single receiver rules: hitch unless pressed; if the cornerback is pressed (less than 5 yards off), run a go route.

      • On 3rd or 4th down, run to the sticks.

  • Quarterback (QB):

    • Quick game: if a single cornerback is 8+ yards off, take the single hitch.

    • Rhythm: look at cushion, matchup, and leverage for the best option.

    • Read: the other pre-snap receiver (inside/outside).

  • Release: Get behind the offensive line.

Fox Play

  • Objective: Quick passing game with the option to tag a run concept.

  • Playside Assignment:

    • If the play is Fox-Run tagged, execute a vertical route.

  • Quarterback (QB):

    • Rhythm: execute the tagged play, pump against zone hips.

    • Read: #1 pre-snap matchup.

    • Rush:

      • #2 pre-snap matchup

    • Release: escape or checkdown.

Smash Play

  • Objective: To create a high-low read for the quarterback using a corner route and a hitch route.

  • Playside Assignment:

    • Position:

      • Hitch rules apply.

        • In the core, execute a run block or pass protection.

    • Backs (F/H): 5 yard chain.

    • Outside Receivers (O/S, L/R): Corner route.

      • Outside the 20-yard line, run to the front pylon.

      • Inside the 20-yard line, run to the back pylon.

    • Slots (Z/H):

  • Backside Assignment:

    • Hitch rules apply.

      • If split out, mirror the pass concept.

      • Single receiver rules: hitch unless pressed; if the cornerback is pressed (less than 5 yards off), run a go route.

  • Quarterback (QB):

    • Quick game: if a single cornerback is 8+ yards off, take the single hitch.

    • Rhythm: outside chain based on matchup/leverage/cushion.

    • Read: slot corner to pre-snap side.

    • Rush: checkdown/tagged route.

  • Release: Get behind the offensive line.
