Midterm Details
Exam Timing and Location
The midterm will commence at 09:00 AM next week.
The exam will be held in class and will last for two hours, concluding at 11:00 AM.
Arriving late will reduce the time available to complete the exam (e.g., arriving at 10:00 AM leaves only one hour).
Exam Content
The midterm will cover five texts:
The Big Sleep
"The Shawl
"Miss Harville"
Two additional stories (unspecified in title).
Exam Structure
The exam has two parts:
Close Reading
Short Answers
Close Reading
Two selections will be provided.
Students must write approximately 400 words for each selection.
One selection will be from
The Big Sleep
, and the other from one of the short stories.
Short Answers
A total of five short answer questions will be given.
Students are required to answer only four of the five questions.
It is advisable to prioritize and answer the four questions that you know best.
The questions not answered will not be graded. Only the first four questions answered.
Short answer questions will cover topics discussed in class, such as:
Symbolism of elements (e.g., "x," "y," or "z").
Relationships between characters.
Significance of the setting.
Definitions and examples of literary phrases and concepts (e.g., red herring, locker room mystery).
