Common Procedures

  • Abortion (ICD-10-PCS): Surgical termination of a pregnancy.

  • Bypass: Altering route of passage of contents of a tubular body part.

  • Control (ICD-10-PCS): Stopping, or attempting to stop, postprocedural or other acute bleeding.

  • Change (ICD-10-PCS): Taking out, or off, a device from a body part and putting back an identical or similar device without cutting the skin.

  • Creation (ICD-10-PCS): Putting in or on biological or synthetic material to replicate a new body part.

  • Destruction: Physical eradication of all or a portion of a body part using energy or chemicals.

  • Delivery: Assisting the passage of the products of conception from the genital canal.

  • Detachment: Cutting off a portion of an upper or lower extremity.

  • Dilation (ICD-10-PCS): Expanding an orifice or the lumen of a tubular body part.

Definitions of Procedures

  • Excision: Cutting out a portion of a body part without replacement.

  • External: Procedures performed on the skin or mucous membrane.

  • Extirpation: Taking or cutting out solid matter from a body part.

  • Division (ICD-10-PCS): Cutting into a body part without draining fluids.

  • Extraction: Taking out a part from a body.

  • Drainage (ICD-10-PCS): Taking out fluids and/or gases from a body part.

  • Fusion: Joining together parts of an articular body part rendering it immobile.

  • Fragmentation: Breaking solid matter in a body part into pieces.

  • Inspection: Visually and/or manually exploring a body part.

  • Occlusion: Completely closing an orifice or lumen of a tubular body part.

  • Insertion: Putting in a nonbiological appliance to assist physiological function.

  • Percutaneous Endoscopic: Entry through the skin to visualize the procedure's site.

  • Release: Freeing a body part from a constraint.

  • Repair: Restoring a body part to its normal structure and function.

  • Replacement: Putting in biological or synthetic material to take place/function of a body part.

  • Reattachment: Putting back a separated body part.

  • Removal: Taking out a device from a body part.

  • Transplantation: Putting in a living body part taken from another individual.

  • Via Natural or Artificial Opening: Entry through a natural or artificial opening to perform the procedure.
