It shows the higher up the social class you are, the more privileged you are. This is shown on rule 198 and 199 where if one pays more if they hurt the eye or bone of a freeperson than a slave.

This would discourage people from committing crimes across the empire, as the punishments are harsh and often lethal. For example, if a woman wants to divorce her husband without evidence of being a good spouse, she would be thrown into the river.

How did Hammurabi’s Law Code advance civilization?

Hammurabi’s law establishes that the government cares for its citizens and will protect them, including protecting the weak from the strong so people receive justice and safety, and that the government is powerful enough to do so.
