COURSE DESCRIPTION
- Art Appreciation is a three-unit course that develops students' ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique works of art.
- Through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches this course equips students with a broad knowledge of the practical, historical, philosophical, and social relevance of the arts in order to hone students' ability to articulate their understanding of the arts.
- The course also develops students' competency in researching and curating (selecting, organizing, and looking after the items in (a collection or exhibition) art as well as conceptualizing, mounting, and evaluating art productions.
- The course aims to develop students' genuine appreciation for Philippine arts by providing them opportunities to explore the diversity and richness and their rootedness in Filipino culture.
COURSE OUTCOMES
- At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of arts in general, including their function, value, and historical significance.
- Define and demonstrate the elements and principles of design; Explain and evaluate different theories of art; Situate Philippine arts in a global context.
- Analyze and appraise works of art based on aesthetic value, historical context, tradition, and social relevance.

- Mount an art exhibit (concept development production and postproduction, marketing, documentation, critiquing).
- Create their own works of art and curate their own production or exhibit.
- Utilize art for self-expression and for promoting advocacies.
- Deepen their sensitivity to self, community, and society.
- Discover and deepen their identity through art with respect to their nationality, culture, and religion.
- Develop an appreciation of the local arts.
WHAT IS ART
- Art is one of the many ways humans seek to understand themselves and the world. Alongside science, technology, social sciences, and philosophy, the humanities and fine arts offer a creative, emotional, and intuitive lens to explore the human condition.
ETYMOLOGY OF ART
- ART comes from the Aryan root word AR which means to put together.
- Latin word ars which means skills/ability.
- Cover those areas of artistic creativity - embraces the visual arts, literature, music and dance.
- Expresses aesthetic ideas by use of skill & imagination.
DIVISION OF THE ARTS
- Visual: arts that are primarily seen, occupy space.
- Auditory: heard, timed arts; exist in time.
- Combined/performing arts: combines visual & auditory elements.
- EXAMPLES:
- Visual arts: paintings, sculptures and architectures.
- Auditory arts: music and poetry.
- Combined: drama & theatre, dancing, cinema & TV, opera.

EVOLUTION OF ART
- Art also means craft or skill—something practical, like carpentry or blacksmithing.
- During the Renaissance, art evolved into something expressive and aesthetic, eventually forming the concept of fine arts we know today.
TIME PERIODS / MEANING OF ART
- Ancient: Practical skill or craft.
- Medieval: Book learning (e.g., logic).
- Renaissance: Return to craft, craftsmanship.
- 17th-18th c.: Separation of “fine” and “useful” arts.
ART IS UNIVERSAL
- The presence of art is universal and perennial—seen in how people dress, what music they enjoy, or what architecture they admire.
- While its forms change, the human impulse to create, appreciate, and seek beauty remains constant.
ART AS NATURE
- Art is not the same as nature—it is man’s interpretation of nature, filtered through emotion, imagination, and experience.
- Thus, appreciating art helps individuals understand themselves, develop taste, and experience life more meaningfully.

- Humanities are expressions of man ’s feelings and thoughts.
- Emphasizes dignity and worthiness of man and recognizes creative expressions.
- Aimed to shape students' subjective energies (feelings, attitudes and aspirations).

MAN NEEDS AN IMAGE OF HIMSELF
- Humanities help individuals develop a sense of self-awareness by exploring art, literature, philosophy, and history.
- Through these disciplines, people understand how others perceive humanity and reflect on their own identity, values, and place in the world.

- By studying the humanities, individuals delve into the complexities of human nature, including emotions, intellect, morality, and creativity.
- It helps people grasp why humans think, feel, and act the way they do, fostering deeper self-understanding and empathy for others.
