Composition of the Biosphere

The biosphere describes the collective regions of Earth where life exists. It is structured into three primary sub-spheres: the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. The lithosphere refers to the thin outer layer of the Earth's crust, consisting of mineral and rock components. The hydrosphere encompasses all water on the planet, including oceans, rivers, streams, groundwater, and moisture within the air. The atmosphere is the thin veil of air surrounding the planet, where life such as bacteria and viruses can exist up to dozen of miles above the surface. Collectively, these components are referred to as the geosphere or the ecosphere.

Biological Hierarchy and Organization

Life on Earth is organized into a specific hierarchy starting with the individual organism, such as a pronghorn envelope. Groups of the same organisms form populations, and multiple populations interacting in a specific area constitute communities. When these communities are considered alongside their physical environment, they form ecosystems. Large-scale areas characterized by similar climate and biological communities are known as biomes, which ultimately comprise the biosphere. Species are specifically defined as individual organisms capable of interbreeding to produce viable offspring.

Defining Characteristics of Biomes

A biome is a large unit of life characterized by consistent climate patterns and a common set of plant and animal populations. Scientists generally recognize eight to 10 major biomes globally. Precipitation, including rainfall and snowfall, is the primary factor determining the location and type of a biome, followed closely by temperature. There is a distinct correlation between precipitation levels and vegetation size; for instance, areas with higher rainfall typically support taller vegetation, such as nine feet high grasses or large hickory and pine trees, whereas arid regions like Western Oklahoma may only support grasses one or two inches tall.

Factors Influencing Biome Distribution

The geographic distribution of biomes is influenced by latitude, altitude, and proximity to oceans. Temperature layers shift latitudinally; temperatures are warmest at the equator where the sun strikes most directly and cool as one moves toward the poles due to the curvature of the Earth. Oceans serve to moderate the temperatures of nearby terrestrial biomes. Additionally, physical barriers such as mountain ranges significantly impact local climates and the resulting ecoregions. Productivity, which measures the amount of life that can grow and exist within a location, is highest in biomes with abundant nutrients and water, such as tropical rainforests.

North American Biome Profiles

North America exhibits a diverse range of biomes distributed according to east-west precipitation gradients and south-north temperature changes. The most northern region is the tundra, followed by the taiga immediately to the south. The Southeast United States is primarily characterized as temperate deciduous forest, while the central United States extending into Canada consists of grasslands. The continent also features desert regions and temperate rainforests along the West Coast. Individual ecoregions within these biomes are directly influenced by specialized local rainfall patterns and geographic features.
