Primary data
  • Primary data: collected by person directly from source.

  • Primary data collection methods: Surveys; Polls; Questionnaires.

  • Focus: primary data collection and use.

Survey basics
  • Survey: collection of questions to collect data from participants.

  • Questions pre-written, based on data user wants.

  • Input control allows respondent answer.

  • Participant: person answering survey questions.

Data types in surveys
  • Most survey data 2 types: Quantitative data, Qualitative data.

  • Quantitative data: numerical format.

  • Qualitative data: text, not easily processed into information.

  • Comments/opinions → qualitative data examples.

Qualitative data characteristics
  • Qualitative data → words.

  • Opinions/comments → qualitative data examples.

  • Words difficult to count/summarise.

  • Hard to graph words.

Types of survey questions
  • 2 types of survey questions: open-ended questions, closed-ended questions.

Closed-ended questions

  • Closed-ended questions → limit responses.

  • Examples: yes/no, number between 10 and 100, multiple-choice, dropdown, radio buttons.

  • Ex: "Did you complete your homework?"

Open-ended questions

  • Open-ended questions → no limit to responses.

  • Encourage wide range of responses.

  • Participants give detailed responses.

  • Ex: "Why did you choose to study at Monash College?"

Input controls and data collection
  • Input control type: dictates data type (quantitative or qualitative).

  • Basic input controls:

    • Text box (short): 1-2 word response.

    • Text box (long): extended response (often opinions/reasons).

    • Text box (number): accepts numbers (some set to specific range).

    • Multiple choice (single answer): user selects one option.

    • Multiple choice (multiple answers): respondent selects 2+ options.

    • Rating scales: opinion collection, data easily numerical (e.g., slider).

  • Many more input controls exist.
