Fundamentals of Biology and Its Primary Branches
Biology, also referred to as life science, is defined as the scientific study of living things. Scientists who specialize in studying living organisms are known as biologists. The field of biological science encompasses several primary branches that specialize in different forms of life and levels of environmental interaction.
Zoology is the branch of biology dedicated specifically to the study of animals and how they live. Botany is the study of plants. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, defined as organisms that are too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope. Ecology is the scientific study of organisms interacting with their surroundings. Human anatomy and physiology represents a fifth major branch of biology, dedicated to examining the structure and mechanical function of the human body.
Structural and Functional Organization
Biological investigation relies on understanding both the physical construction and operational mechanics of living entities. Anatomy is defined as the study of an organism's shape and structure.
Physiology is the study of how an organism's structure functions. While anatomy focuses on the physical structure and shape, physiology explains the mechanisms and processes by which those structural components work together to maintain life.
Cellular Life and Core Biological Characteristics
The fundamental unit of all biological structure is the cell. A cell is the smallest unit of living things that can be said to be alive. Organisms are classified by their cellular structure; a unicellular organism consists of a single cell that performs all of the organism's necessary life functions independently.
All living entities exhibit specific universal properties that characterize life:
Growth is a fundamental property exhibited by all living things as they develop throughout their existence.
Homeostasis is the process by which an organism maintains a stable internal condition, which is strictly required for survival.
Reproduction is the biological process by which life continues through the generation of new organisms.
Metabolism encompasses all the vital chemical processes that living things perform to generate energy, construct cell parts, and sustain life.
