Steps to administering medication:

  5. Check for dicoloration or impurities

  6. Verify form, route, and dose

  7. Check the five rights

Name:Oxygen

Action: Gas that improves respirations

indications:

  1. Repiratry distress

  2. Difficulty breathing

Contra-indicatios:

  1. Relativ COPD pts (in hypoxic drive)

  2. Brain injuries

Route: Inhaled

Dose:

  1. Nasal canula: 1-6 lpm

  2. NRM- 10-15 lpm

  3. BVM- 15-25 lpm

Side affects: None

Name: Oral Glucosse

Action: Increases availble glucose inblood streams

Indications: BGL <70

Contra-Indications: Unable to manage airway/secreations, unable to follow instrcutions, unconscious

Route: Oral

Dose:15 grams

Side Effects: None

Name: Aspirin

Action: Antiplatelet Aggregator (makes platelets slippery)

Indications: Chest Pain

Contra-indications:

  1. Allergy

  2. Recent internal bleedingor suspected head bleeds

Route: Oral

Dose: 81 mg x4 324 mg

Side affect: None

Name: Allbuterol, Levalablbuterol

Inhaled bronchodialators: Metere dose inhaler

Actions: Beta 2 agonist; Bronchodilator

Indications: Wheenzing lung sounds with dsypnea

Contra-indications:

  1. allergy

  2. Relative

    1. hypertention

    2. tachycardia

Rought: inhaled

Dose: 2.5mh/3 ml nebulized or 1 puff of MDL

Side affects:

  1. Tacycardia

  2. Hypertention

Name: Nitroglycerin

Actions: Dialates blood vessles to reduse workload of the heart ndallow increased bloodflow to the heart muscle

Indications: Cardiac chest pain with prescription

Contra-indications:

  1. Allergy

  2. SBP <100gh

  3. Erectile dysfunction medication use in 72 hrs

Route: Sublingual (under tounge)

Does: .4mg; up to 3 doses every 5 min

Side effects:

  1. Hypotension

  2. Headache

Name: Empinephrine

Actions: Alpha and Beta agonist

  1. Vasoconstriction

  2. Bronchodilation

Indications: Anaphylaxis

Contra-indications:

  1. Not in Anaphylaxis

  2. Relative

    1. Tachycardia

    2. Hypertention

Route: Intramuscular

Dose: 0.3 mg (adult) .15mg (pediatric) with a prescribed epi auto-injector

Side affects:

  1. Tachycardia

  2. Hypertention

Name: Naloxone Hydochlorie; Narcan

Actions: Competes with the binding sites where opioids want to go (opiod agonist)

Indications: Sever respiratory deressions/ apnea with suspected opiod overdose

Contra-indications: None

Route: Intranasal (use MAD devise)

Dose: .2mg to 2mg (2mg is acceptable at EMT levels)

Side effects:

  1. Prgectile vomiting

  2. Agression

  3. Withdrawls

  4. Siezers

Name: Ibuprofen, motrin, advil

Actions:

  1. NSAID (non-steridal anti-inflamitroy drug)

  2. Useed for treating pain; fever and inflammation by blcking the production of pros

  3. inhibits platelets fromaggregting, avoiding clotting

Indictions: Pain

Contra-indications:

  1. Allergy

  2. Coagulation disorder

  3. Interla bleeding

Route: Oral

Dose: Varries per protocol

Side effects: Bleeding exacerbations

Name: Acetaminophen

Actions: Pain relief and fever reduction

Inddications: Fever and Pain

Contra-indications:

  1. Allergy

  2. Liver disease

Route: Oral

Dose: Varries per protocol

Side affects: Toxicity to liver

Name: Pralidoxime chloride (2-Pam) and atropinne (for eur toxins)

Action:

  1. A cholingeric toxicity antidote

  2. Blocks the parasympatheticnervous sytem ad reverses the effects of chlingeric poisons and drugs

  3. Blocks receptor sites keeping the poison from binding

Indications:

  1. Known or suspected WMD (weapons of mass distrcutions)

  2. Exposure to nerve agents

Contra-indications: No known

Route: Auto-injector (DUoDote)

  • injects both drugs through one needle at the same time deep into the muslce

Dose:

  1. First dose: Intramuscular into the mid-lateral thigh

    • Takes 10-15 minutes to take effect

  2. Additional Doses- If sever symptonms arise at any time after first does, administer two addtional single dose injection intramuscularly in rapid suggestion

Side Effects: Dry mucous membranes
