Nahua identity in the Valley of Mexico

The Aztecs are described as part of a larger group of native peoples living in the Valley of Mexico, known as the Nahua. The Nahua language name means "tongue." Many native groups refer to themselves as "the people" (for example, the Dene in Northwestern New Mexico call themselves "the people").

Color-coded creator figures (Biscuitlifoca)

There are color-coded creator figures called Biscuitlifoca (colors include White, Black, Green, and Red). They create the world but are somewhat jealous of one another. The first Biscuitlifoca to leave the world is White Biscuitlifoca. A huge jaguar arrives and eats the sun, ending the first day.

Cosmology: sun, afterlife, and male ideas

Each successive brother takes over as the main god for the world. The major god that people see as the most fleet is said to have gone down to hell. If you are a man, you might come back as a hummingbird or a butterfly, or you might push the sun across the sky for $5$ years. This reflects a male-centered aspect of the cosmology.

Material culture and divine desire

There is a sense of parallel production in the region, with valued items such as quetzal feathers or obsidian that the deities (the aspects) may want. These goods appear to be linked to the divine world and its desires.
