DRRR Q2

Week #1

Earthquake Hazards

Ground shaking

P WAVE (Primary)

  • Faster

  • Generates less power

S WAZE (Secondary)

  • Slower

  • Generates more power

Is it possible to distance from the epicenter of the earthquake?

Yes.

You felt the s-wave

  • count the interval in seconds between P & S waves and multiply by 8.4. You will get on approximation in terms of Km

You did not feel the s-wave

  • you are far frim the source or it was a weak earthquake

Ground Rupture

  • Displacement of the ground due to the violent shaking

  • Vertical displacement

  • Horizontal displacement

Liquefaction

  • sand deposit

  • Decrease ground support

  • Structures & objects may lean, sink, or topple

Soil become soft and liquid, it will result to structures leaning, sinking, or even being toppled.

Ground Subsidence

  • Lowering of the ground

  • Decrease ground support

  • Might look strong and durable outside, but the inside of the ground is very fragile

Landslide

Tsunami

  • Series of large waves resulting from disturbance of sea water

  • Near-field or local

  • Near-field or distant

Are you ready for an Earthquake?

Duck, Cover, & Hold

  • Cover your head with your right hand and use your left hand to protect your nape

  • Crouch under a sturdy four legged structure and kneel down on one knee

Indoors

  • It is safest to stay under a sturdy piece of furniture

  • Stay in bed and cover your head with your pillow and hang on

Outdoors

  • Seek an open area clear from falling debris

  • Stay away from buildings, trees, and power lines.

Trapped

  • Send a text or make noise by ganging a pipe or a wall

  • Cover your mouth with your shirt, it is best to use a whistle rather than shouting

In a vehicle

  • STOP and find a safe place, do not attempt to drive and avoid overpasses, bridges, and power lines as they might have been damaged from the Earthquake

In a crowded place

  • Do the Duck, cover, and hold.

  • DO NOT

Prepare in advance and know what to do because in a panic situation, confusion reduces ability to think straight and correctly.

Week #4

Fire

Used for cooking contributes to the development of transportation, metalworking, etc.

Causes of Fire

  • Natural Hazards

    • earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, drought, and very high tempreature

  • Human-made conditions

    • transportation accidents, chemical explosion, faulty electrical connections

  • Mismanagement

    • negligence, irresponsible handling of fire

FIRE TRIANGLE → FIRE TETRAHEDRON

March is Fire Prevention Month since this is the start of summer and it is very hot during this time.
