The Five Stages of Plot

  • Exposition: Introduces characters, setting, and conflict (Date noted: 08/18/2016).

  • Rising Action: Events build tension and complications.

  • Climax: The turning point and most exciting moment.

  • Falling Action: Events that occur after the climax.

  • Resolution: The conflict is solved and the story ends.

Sentence Structure: Subject and Predicate

  • Main Parts of a Sentence: A sentence is made up of two main parts:

    • The subject

    • The predicate

  • Definition of Subject: The subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about.

  • Definition of Predicate: The predicate of a sentence tells what the subject does or what happens to the subject.

  • Example Sentence Analysis: "Ten gray stallions jumped over the fence."

  • Demonstrative Examples of Subjects:

    • "A person in the gym describes the contest." (Subject: Person)

    • "The huge double doors slammed shut." (Subject: Doors)

Compound Subjects and Compound Verbs

  • Compound Subject:

    • Definition: Contains two or more subjects that share the same verb in a sentence (Date noted: 08/21/2026).

    • Example: "Lloyd, Flo and I collected all the rubbish."

    • Example: "Either snow or showers are predicted"

  • Compound Verb:

    • Definition: Consists of two or more connected verbs that have the same subject.

    • Connecting Word Rules: The connecting word is usually "and", "do", "or", or "but". The connecting word is placed between the verbs.

    • Example A: "Tanya stopped and stared at Raiden."

    • Example B: "You may watch a movie, read a book, play chess, or…"

  • Inverted Sentence Example: "At the bottom of the trunk were some old magazine"

Nouns and Noun Types

  • Definition of Noun: A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, and an idea (Date noted: 08.27.2016).

  • Core Categories and Examples:

    • Person -> Teacher

    • Place -> City

    • Thing -> book

    • Idea -> happiness

  • Types of Nouns:

    • Common Nouns: General names.

      • Examples: teacher, city, mountain.

    • Proper Nouns: Specific names that begin with a capital letter.

      • Examples: Mrs. Williams, St Croix, Mount Everest.

    • Concrete Nouns: Nouns that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled.

      • Examples: Corn, spalitiers.

    • Abstract Nouns: Names ideas or feelings.

      • Examples: freedom, bravery, honesty, justice.

Pronouns, Types, and Antecedents

  • Definition of Pronoun: A pronoun replaces a noun (Date noted: 08-28-2026).

  • Types of Pronouns:

    • Personal Noun / Personal Pronoun

    • Reflexive Pronouns

    • Indefinite Pronouns

    • Demonstrative Pronouns

    • Relative Pronouns

  • Examples of Pronoun Usage in Sentences:

    • "Every week, Manuel forced himself to save his allowance."

    • "Our guests served themselves at the dinner."

  • Pronoun Antecedent:

    • Definition: It is the word that a pronoun stands for.

    • Example 1: "Alicia carried her umbrella to school." (Antecedent: Alicia)

    • Example 2: "Our guests served themselves at the Dinner." (Antecedent: guests)
