SYRIA

  • Crisis in Syria occured in the second decade of the 21st century and its been a major factor in the recent increase in refugees

  • Civil war (March 2011) led to internal displacement of 7.6 million people

  • Large percentage of refugees have more to countries which boarder Syria: Turkey (1.9 million), Lebanon (1.5 million)

  • Residents in Kobani and Syria have been living in tented camps near Turkish boarders, with the intention of returning to their neighbourhoods and farmlands as soon as the boarder crossing is reopened

  • Lebanon has been so overwhelmed by Syrian refugess in Jan 22015 the government imposed the need for an entry visa

  • Syrain workers must be sponsored by Lebanese individuals or companies

  • Other refugees have taken longer journey to Aksaray and Istanbul

  • Route to Europe depend on th extent of wealth - thers is a less costly sea route with greater risk, or more expensive but safer arrangement for a fake passport and direct flight

Main reasons for the large number of refugees include:

  • political persecution

  • economic harship

  • natural hazards
