1. Sentence Structure & Connectors (Konnektoren)

Writing only simple main sentences (Subject + Verb + Object) will keep you at a B1 level. To reach B2, you need to mix main and subordinate clauses using advanced connectors:

  • Causal Clauses (Reasons): Instead of weil (because), prefer da (since) or aufgrund (+ Genitive / due to).

    • B2 Example: Da der Service mangelhaft war, fordere ich eine Rückerstattung. (Since the service was deficient, I demand a refund.)

  • Concessive Clauses (Contrasts): Use obwohl (although) or trotz (+ Genitive / despite) instead of just aber (but).

    • B2 Example: Trotz Ihrer Versprechen war das WLAN nicht verfügbar. (Despite your promises, the Wi-Fi was not available.)

  • Two-Part Connectors: Use structures like nicht nur ..., sondern auch (not only..., but also) to score high points. sowohl…als auch, Entweder oder, zwar aber, weder…noch, teils…teils

    • B2 Example: Das Zimmer war nicht nur schmutzig, sondern das Personal war auch unhöflich. (The room was not only dirty, but the staff was also rude.)

2. Advanced B2 Grammatical Features

To maximize your grammar score, you must actively weave in these structures:

  • Passive Voice (especially with Modal Verbs): This shifts the focus from emotional blaming to professional, objective facts.

    • B2 Example: Dieser Fehler hätte leicht vermieden werden können. (This mistake could have easily been avoided.)

  • Infinitive with "zu": Perfect for expressing your willingness or demands.

    • B2 Example: Ich bin nicht bereit, diesen Zustand länger zu akzeptieren. (I am not willing to accept this condition any longer.)

  • Konjunktiv II (Polite Demands): Crucial for the closing paragraph.

    • B2 Example: Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie die Kosten tragen würden. (I would be grateful to you if you would bear the costs.)

  • Past Perfect (Plusquamperfekt): Used to show that one event happened before another event in the past.

    • B2 Example: Ich hatte mich vorab vergewissert, dass alle Angaben korrekt sind. (I had explicitly made sure beforehand that all details were correct.)

3. The Genitive Case (Nominalstil)

At the B2 level, examiners strictly check if you can use the genitive case properly after specific professional prepositions like bezüglich (regarding), aufgrund (due to), or trotz (despite).

  • B1 Level (Too simple): Wegen dem Lärm... (Dative - colloquial)
