Untitled Flashcards Set
Some West African villages gradually developed into towns and cities due to the growth of ironworking and the expansion of trade. Around 500 B.C.E., the Nok people in central Nigeria began making iron tools, which significantly improved agricultural efficiency and led to increased food production. This surplus allowed villages to grow and become important trading centers, especially those located along rivers. The ancient city of Jenne-jeno, established in the 3rd century B.C.E., is an example of such development. It thrived for over 1,600 years, trading surplus goods and demonstrating advanced urban organization. Blacksmiths held respected positions in society due to the high value placed on iron tools, often acting as political leaders and community figures.
