Separation Methods and Chemical Building Blocks
Methods of Mixture Separation
Magnetism:
A physical separation technique applied when one of the substances present in a mixture exhibits magnetic properties.
Procedure: A magnet is brought close to the mixture to pull out and remove the magnetic component.
Example: Using a magnet to pull out and separate iron filings from sand.
Decanting:
A physical separation technique used to separate liquids with different densities.
Procedure: The top layer of a liquid mixture is poured off after the less dense substance separates and floats on top of the denser substance.
Elements, Compounds, and Molecules
Elements:
Defined as the simplest building blocks of matter.
Cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Composed entirely of only one type of atom.
Examples: Oxygen, gold.
Compounds:
Composed of two or more elements combined together.
Form many of the common substances interacted with on a daily basis.
Examples:
Water ()
Salt / Sodium Chloride ()
Molecules:
Defined as groups of two or more atoms that are joined together chemically.
Classification types:
Elemental Molecules: Molecules formed from the same element (e.g., ).
Compound Molecules: Molecules formed from different elements (e.g., ).
