ORIGINS OF PSYCHOLOGY
~RENE DESCARTES~
→ Suggested that the mind and the body are independent from each other (known as CARTESIAN DUALISM)
~JOHN LOCKE~
→ Suggested that all experiences are obtained through our senses, NOT inherited through knowledge or instincts (known as PROPOSED EMPIRICISM)
~CHARLES DARWIN~
→ Suggested that all human and animal behaviour has changed over generations (SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST)
~WILHELM WUNDT~
→ Known as the father of psychology
→ He opened the first psychology lab in Leipzig, Germany
→ He aimed to document and describe the nature of human consciousness (INTROSPECTION)
→ Him & his colleagues recorded their own conscious thoughts and aimed to break them down into individual parts (STRUCTURALISM)
→ most of his work is now considered ‘naive’ and ‘invalid’
INTROSPECTION
→ Recorded under controlled conditions using the same stimulus
→ Participants listened to a ticking metronome and were asked their thoughts, feelings and sensations in response to it
→ Participants report their experiences to which Wundt would analyse them
~WATSON~
→ He questioned introspection as he argued that the data produced is too subjective
→ He believed psychology should only study things that can be observed and measured
→ From this, THE BEHAVIOURIST APPROACH was born
SCIENTIST APPROACH → continued using the experimental methods in research. Used technology such as fMRI and EEG techniques.
