Cell Division

cells- the essential link between generations

  • genome: the sum total of all genetic information in a cell (organized into genes)

prokaryotic cells- bacteria divided by binary fission

  • the single circular bacterial chromosome is replicated

  • Replication begins at the origin

    of replication and proceeds bi-

    directionally

  • New chromosomes are

partitioned to opposite ends of

the cell

  • A septum forms to divide the

cell into 2 cells

cell cycle:

  • cell cell division enables multicellular eukaryotes

    • gamets have one set of chromosime

    • somatic cells have two sets of chromosomes

  • every eukaryotic species has a characterisitc number of chromosomes in each cell nucleus.

Interphsse:

  • G1 phase- growing but not dividing

  • s phase- replication (5^1 - 3^1 )
