Public Speaking Notes — Informative Speech (Past/Present/Future)
Two Keys of Public Speaking
- Creation of the speech (outline)
- Delivery (persuasive)
Course Structure and Speech Types
- 5 graded speeches: 3 informative, 2 persuasive; last persuasive is a group presentation
- Purpose: inform
- First informative speech: Past, Present, Future; three items (past, present, future)
- Item rules: non-living items preferred; living items require instructor clearance
- Audience-centered: choose items and visuals that all audience members can engage with and see
Speech Structure (Bird’s-Eye View)
- Introduction: hook/attention getter; state your name; preview main points
- Body: three main points: Past, Present, Future
- Conclusion: review main points; strong closing; signal end of speech
- Structure mnemonic: Tell them what you’re going to tell them → Tell them → Tell them what you told them
Delivery Guidelines
- Delivery is graded but secondary to organization and content
- Tips to appear confident: speak louder, slow down; ensure back-row can hear
- Nervousness is normal; feedback from peers is helpful for improvement
- Use clear transitions/signposts between sections
Outline Template and Assignment Instructions
- Prepare a separate document for the outline and outcome statement
- Example outcome: "At the end of my presentation, my audience will know three new things about me."
- Include: attention getter, credibility, preview; body with Past/Present/Future; transitions; conclusion; references (usually not required for this speech)
- Three main points: Past, Present, Future; each main point should have at least two subpoints if used
- You will type the document and submit on Blackboard
