God: convert Indians to Christianity
Gold: Spanish monarchy wanted gold for the treasury and to expand the trade empire
Glory: conquistadors wanted personal fortune and fame
Hernando de Soto
Importance: In 1540 he became the first European to explore the interior of Georgia
Goal: To find gold—he never did
Impact on Natives: Thousands died from DeSoto’s metal weapons, plated armor, war dogs, horses, and diseases like smallpox
The Spanish Missions (1568-1684)
Goal: civilize the American Indians and convert them to Christianity
Importance: Georgia’s first European settlements
Location: Georgia’s Barrier Islands
Activities that took place at the Spanish missions along Georgia’s coast:
Taught the natives about Christianity
The natives were taught to read and write Spanish
Served as military bases
Results:
Natives were often forced to accept Catholicism
Some were enslaved
Millions were killed by Spanish weapons and diseases like smallpox

- Permanent colonization (settlement) in North
Looking for riches, power, resources, from colonies
- Religious freedom
- Begin a new life
Merchantilism: a country seeks to export (sell) more than it imports (buys)
The colonies provide raw materials
England uses materials to manufacture goods
England sells the goods back to the colonies
England makes a profit
