NEURO: Basal ganglion, hippocampus, amygdala

Basal Ganglion (Grey Matter):

Clinically named due to resting tremor being the common affect of damage to basal ganglion.

Eg. Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy

  1. Caudate

  2. Putamen

  3. Globus Pallidus

Hippocampus (Grey Matter):

Memory

Amygdala (Grey Matter):

Negative emotions

Type of white matter

  1. Projection

    • to brainstem and spine

      • Internal capsule

  2. Association

    • All capsules are all Association

      • Eg. extreme, external

    • Within hemisphere

  3. Commissural fibers

    • across hemispheres

ICE PICK

Insula Cortex

  • affects GI system

  • nervousness and GI

Extreme Capsule (White Matter):

  • Lays medial to Insula Cortex

Claustrum (Grey Matter):

  • thin space of grey matter near the Insula Cortex and Extreme cortex

External Capsule (White Matter):

  • Lays internal to Claustrum

Lentiform Nucleus (Grey Matter):

  • Wedge shape grey matter

  • collection of cell bodies

    • Putamen

    • Globus Pallidus

      • Lateral Palidum

      • Medial Palidum

Internal Capsule (White Matter):

  1. Anterior limb

    • thalamus - frontal lobe

    • lentiform - caudate

    • Cortex - corpus striatum

    • frontal lobe - pontine nuclei

  2. Genu

    • Bend/ apex

  3. Posterior limb

    • corticobulbar (innervates cranial nerve nuclei) and corticospinal

    • sensory fibers from the thalamus

    • optic radiations

    • acoustic ribers

    • occipital and temporal - pontine nuclei

Caudate

  • Diverging “C” shape

  • goes around the brain stem to avoid important centers that live in the brainstem such as breathing.

  • same histological origin as the Putamen

Thalamus
