Vulvitis

  • Definition: Inflammation of the vulva.
  • Associated Conditions:
    • Diabetes.
    • Dermatologic problems.
    • Poor hygiene.
    • Secondary irritation from vaginal discharge related to specific vaginitis.

Vulvodynia

  • Definition: Chronic or intermittent vulvar pain syndrome.
  • Symptoms:
    • Burning.
    • Stinging.
    • Irritation.
    • Stabbing pain.
  • Onset: Often initiates with first tampon use experience between ages 18-25.
  • Treatment:
    • Depends on the cause.
    • Topical treatments.
    • Self-management care including biofeedback.
    • Dietary changes.
    • Surgery.
    • Tricyclic antidepressants.
