Vulvitis
- Definition: Inflammation of the vulva.
- Associated Conditions:
- Diabetes.
- Dermatologic problems.
- Poor hygiene.
- Secondary irritation from vaginal discharge related to specific vaginitis.
Vulvodynia
- Definition: Chronic or intermittent vulvar pain syndrome.
- Symptoms:
- Burning.
- Stinging.
- Irritation.
- Stabbing pain.
- Onset: Often initiates with first tampon use experience between ages 18-25.
- Treatment:
- Depends on the cause.
- Topical treatments.
- Self-management care including biofeedback.
- Dietary changes.
- Surgery.
- Tricyclic antidepressants.
