Habits in the past

We can talk about habits in the past in 3 multiple ways.

  • Past simple
  • Would + inf (wouldn’t + inf)
  • Used to + inf

\

Used to:

We use ‘used to’ to talk about past habits which we don’t do in the present, or past states which are no longer true. We can always use ‘used to’.

In questions and negatives (apart from never) we use ‘use to

\

Would:

We can not use ‘would’ to talk about past states only when we talk about past habits.

We can not use ‘would’ when we talk about emotions or use the verb to be.

\

Past simple

We can only use the past simple when there is a time indication in the sentence.
