Data, Raw Data, and the Information Processing Cycle
Raw data basics
Data types include: numbers, words, pictures, sounds, audio, etc.
Raw data represents things about people, things, and ideas.
The ability to program data to change it distinguishes a computer from non-programmable machines (e.g., a toaster, a water dispenser).
The computer can be programmed to do multiple things; this programmability is what makes it fundamentally different from non-programmable devices.
From raw data to information
There is a cycle that converts input data into useful information:
Input → Processing → Storage → Output
This cycle explains how raw data is transformed into valuable information through processing, then stored, and finally presented as output.
The conversion is not instantaneous; data is processed step by step.
The data-to-information transformation is central to understanding why data matters.
The Information Processing Cycle (IPC)

Acronyms and terminology around IPC are common; not all acronyms are essential for every IT role.

What makes a computer different from other machines
