Center: “hikes” the ball and blocks to protect the quarterback.

Quarterback: calls the plays and throws the ball.

Wide Receiver: runs pass patterns and catches the ball.

Cornerback: defensive player who defends the wide receiver.

Defensive lineman: rushes the quarterback and tries to “sack” the quarterback.

Running Back: The player that receives a handoff from the quarterback and runs with

the football

Interception: when the defense catches a pass intended for the offense.

Line of scrimmage: imaginary line drawn from the tip of the ball and parallel to the goal line.

Also where the play starts.

Incomplete Pass: when a pass hits the ground.

Fumble: ball carrier loses possession of the ball.

Rush: when the defense attempts to go onto the other side and “tackle” the player.

Downs: The number of tries a team has to advance the ball.

The play begins when a ball is centered and ends when the ball carrier is declared down.

Blitz: when the defense crosses the line of scrimmage without counting “Mississippi” in an

attempt to “tackle” the person with the ball.

Offsides: when a player moves/or crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is hiked.

Touchdown: when the ball is carried or caught across the opponent’s goal line.

Tackle: when the player with the ball gets his/her belt pulled off.

Sack/Loss of Yards: When the quarterback gets the belt pulled off behind the line of

scrimmage.
